JCR Gets Its Brain-Penetrating Hunter Therapy Out of Japan for the First Time, Through the UAE
- JCR Pharmaceuticals received marketing authorization in the United Arab Emirates for IZCARGO (pabinafusp alfa), its enzyme replacement therapy for Hunter syndrome. This is the first authorization outside Japan, where the drug launched in 2021.
- IZCARGO is engineered to cross the blood-brain barrier via transferrin-receptor transcytosis using JCR’s J-Brain Cargo platform, targeting the central nervous system symptoms that conventional enzyme replacement cannot reach.
- Hunter syndrome (MPS II) affects an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people worldwide. A global Phase 3 trial is ongoing.
- JCR partnered with Taiba Middle East for sales and distribution and will pursue further authorizations across MENA. The company expects no material impact on FY2026 results.

JCR calls the financial impact immaterial, and for the UAE alone that is true. The read is the route, not the revenue. Rather than wait on a US or EU decision, JCR used its Japanese authorization as the basis for approval in a reliance market and handed commercialisation to a regional rare-disease specialist. For a disease with perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 patients worldwide, that is the only economically rational way to reach anyone outside the big three markets, and it is a template more Japanese and Asian rare-disease developers will copy. The asset that matters most here is not the enzyme, it is the shuttle: Acumen exercised an option on the same blood-brain-barrier platform for Alzheimer’s candidates in June. A validated way across the BBB is worth considerably more than any single therapy carried through it.
