Shionogi Paid 29 Times Sales for IntraBio, 17 Days After AQNEURSA’s Second FDA Approval
Shionogi said on 5 October that its US subsidiary will acquire IntraBio, an Austin-based rare disease company, for an all-cash upfront payment, taking global rights to AQNEURSA (levacetylleucine). The drug is approved in the US and EU for neurological manifestations of Niemann-Pick disease type C, and on 18 September the FDA approved it for ataxia in Ataxia-Telangiectasia, the first therapy for that indication, with an EU review under way. IntraBio also brings clinical programmes in Pompe disease, Fragile X syndrome and Jordan’s syndrome. The deal follows Shionogi’s April acquisition of global rights to the ALS drug edaravone and is expected to close in November or December.
Shionogi paid for the Ataxia-Telangiectasia label. The multiple only works if the indication approved weeks before signing becomes the larger one, and on Shionogi’s own incidence figures A-T is up to two and a half times as common as Niemann-Pick type C. Buying after approval and paying all of it in cash moves the commercial risk entirely onto Shionogi.
- Rare neurology players: Shionogi is assembling a franchise by acquisition. Edaravone in April and AQNEURSA now give Shionogi two marketed rare neurological products in six months, and chief executive Isao Teshirogi framed the goal as a leading global rare disease business. Expect further bids for approved or late-stage rare neurology assets that its US commercial team can carry.
- Biotech sellers: approval first, cash only. IntraBio sold after US and EU approvals and a fresh second label, taking all of the value upfront with no milestones or contingent payments. For single-asset rare disease companies, a second approved indication is what turns a niche launch into an exit on these terms.
- Signposts: A-T uptake and the EU decision. Shionogi says the financial impact is still under review. The first US quarters of A-T sales, the EMA’s decision on A-T and progress in the Pompe and Fragile X programmes will show whether the multiple bought growth or a platform.
