Lilly Signed Up to $1.1 Billion With METiS TechBio for AI-Designed Lipid Nanoparticles While Paying Only Low Double-Digit Millions Upfront
METiS TechBio, listed in Hong Kong since May, said on 19 October that it will work with Eli Lilly to discover lipid nanoparticle delivery systems that carry therapies to specific tissues, using AiLNP, its AI-driven platform for discovering and optimising ionisable lipids. Lilly contributes drug discovery, development and commercialisation expertise. METiS is eligible for an upfront payment, development, regulatory and commercial milestones, and tiered royalties on net sales of resulting products. The company did not say how many programmes, which tissues or which therapeutic modalities the deal covers. Chairman and chief executive Chris Lai said delivery remains a critical determinant of therapeutic success.
Lilly is buying options on delivery, not a product. With no programmes, tissues or modalities named, Lilly pays little to test whether an AI-designed lipid can carry a payload beyond the liver, where conventional lipid nanoparticles mostly end up. The milestones pay out only if it can.
- Lilly’s RNA and gene medicine work: delivery is the gate. Payloads that work in the liver are common; payloads that reach muscle, lung or immune cells are not. A tissue-specific lipid would let Lilly point molecules it already has at organs it cannot yet reach.
- Western LNP and delivery companies: a low price for platform access is now on the record. A Lilly platform deal with an upfront in the low double-digit millions gives large buyers a reference point for paying little until delivery is shown in vivo. METiS also lists an immune-targeted LNP collaboration with Grit Biotechnology from May.
- Signposts: the first tissue, the first in vivo data and exclusivity. Watch for which tissue and modality Lilly nominates first, any in vivo data showing delivery beyond the liver, and whether later disclosures show the work is exclusive to Lilly.
