- Earendil Labs, an AI-driven biologics company based in Delaware, said on 24 September 2026 that it has signed a research collaboration with Genentech, part of Roche, to discover and develop multiple bispecific antibody programmes in oncology against pre-agreed target combinations. The targets were not disclosed, and the deal is subject to customary closing conditions.
- Earendil receives $55m upfront. The total potential value, including upfront, development, regulatory and sales milestones, is more than $1.5bn, and Earendil is eligible for tiered royalties on net sales.
- Earendil will lead discovery and research through early clinical development. Genentech then takes over global clinical development and commercialisation. Roche’s head of corporate business development, Boris Zaïtra, said bispecifics have reframed how the company approaches treatment precision in oncology.
- This is Earendil’s third big pharma deal in 17 months. Sanofi licensed two autoimmune bispecifics in April 2025 for $125m upfront and up to $1.72bn in milestones, then signed a second collaboration in January 2026 with $160m in upfront and near-term payments. Earendil raised $787m in June 2026, with backing from Sanofi and Pfizer.
Deal read
The upfront is cleanly stated and comparatively small, and Earendil keeps more of the early risk than a pure discovery partner would.
- It is the one clean upfront among this week’s discovery deals. $55m is about 3.7% of the $1.5bn headline. Of the six discovery deals Synopulse covered from 17 September, Orbis, BoomRay and Envisagenics folded their upfronts into a total, Henlius disclosed no amounts, and InnoCare combined upfront and near-term money. Earendil alone states what is paid at signing.
- Earendil funds the step into the clinic. It carries each programme through early clinical development before Genentech takes over, so the cost of first-in-human work sits with Earendil. Its $787m raise in June is what makes a $55m upfront workable, and it is well below the $125m Sanofi paid in 2025 for two named assets under a straight licence.
- One platform, two buyers, split by therapeutic area. Sanofi’s two deals sit in autoimmune and inflammatory disease; Genentech’s is in oncology. VCBeat describes Earendil’s affiliate, Helixon, as China-based, which puts the deal in the same China-linked flow as InnoCare with Lilly and BoomRay with Novartis. Roche signed a second discovery deal the same day, worth up to $2bn with Atavistik in cardiometabolic disease, according to BioSpace.
